Most educators understand the important role
experience plays in the learning process. While a fun learning
environment, with plenty of laughter and respect for the learner's abilities,
also fosters an effective experiential learning environment, it is
important not to confuse experiential learning simply with having fun,
laughing, and being respected. While those factors may improve the
likelihood of experiential learning occurring, it can occur without them; for
example, prison inmates may benefit from experiential learning in the
absence of fun, laughter, or respect. Rather, what is vital in
experiential learning is that the individual is encouraged to directly involve
themselves in the experience, and then to reflect on their experiences using
analytic skills, in order to gain a better understanding of the new knowledge
and retain the information for a longer time.
